An update forced them to scroll through their feed horizontally.

CNBC reports, the feature was supposed to be a test but went out to more users than expected.

The update faced backlash from users with many complaining that the new feature was making it harder to scroll past posts that they weren't interested in.

“Due to a bug, some users saw a change to the way their feed appears today. We quickly fixed the issue and feed is back to normal. We apologize for any confusion.” Instagram said in a statement.

Resistance to the change was so fierce that #instagram update was the number one trend on Twitter, Thursday morning.
