HUD secretary Ben Carson in NYC to make major NYCHA announcement

January 31, 2019 - 1:08 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- HUD Secretary Ben Carson is in Manhattan Thursday and is expected to make a major announcement on NYCHA

Carson's top aide Lynne Patton tweeted the announcement will be great news for residents and it may or may not be good news for Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Carson's visit comes with NYCHA facing a court-imposed deadline today to reach a plan to address living conditions at public housing in the wake of past scandals involving lead paint and lack of heat and hot water.

Carson's could announce a federal takeover of NYCHA, but Patton indicated that won't likely happen.

The mayor's office did not address Patton's message but instead focused on city efforts to keep NYCHA tenants warm.

Warming Centers are open across the city from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
