Ribbon Cut On Veterans’ Housing Complex In Fordham Heights

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The ribbon was cut on Jericho Project's Walton House on Tuesday morning, opening a new home for veterans and young adults in the Bronx.

Karen Wharton said anyone can become homeless. She was serving in the Air Force when Superstorm Sandy destroyed her Coney Island home. She doesn't know where she would be living if not for another complex similar to the one opened Tuesday.

"Maybe lodging with my family member, or maybe a shelter," she said.

Walton House is located in Fordham Heights with rent equal to no more than 30 percent of a tenant's income. It's what's called supportive housing.

"We have case management, we have help securing employment," Tori Lyon said.

Lyon runs Jericho Project which built the project. It will house 56 vets and 33 homeless young adults.
