Hooded teens targeting newsstand vendors in Midtown

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police are on the lookout for hoodie-wearing teens who they say are beating and robbing newsstands in Midtown.

There have been at least seven newsstand robberies in Midtown since Jan. 15 between 34th and 57th streets, police say.

In some of the robberies cash was taken and the thieves punched the newsstand worker or a customer, according to the NYPD.

One newsstand vendor at 57th Street and Eighth Avenue told 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria that his store was hit just a few days ago.

He says the hooded teens stole sodas and juices from his refrigerated case and then moved onto the candy.

“When I told them, 'Stop it, don’t do any shoplifting, any kind of hanky panky here,' they don’t care… They took some chocolates, some Welch's and chips.”

The vendor says luckily no one was hurt in the encounter, but he believes the thieves weren’t raised properly.

“Lack of education, those kids are spoiled,” he said. “If they want chocolate and they don’t have money, I’ll give them chocolate, but don’t steal.”
