Heavy Rain, Strong Winds Cause Flooding Across Area

April 16, 2018 - 1:02 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- It certainly is Monday.

Heavy rains and strong winds caused flooding and major traffic and transit delays across the area.

A flash flood warning was in effect for New York City, Northern New Jersey and the Western Hudson Valley suburbs until 2:15 p.m.

Rain flooded the 145th Street and Broadway subway station. Josh Guild (@jbguild) captured the incredible scene and tweeted the video.

Cars were stranded on area roads in Newark and roads were also flooded in Hoboken and other parts of the Garden State. Cars were stranded on Frelinghuysen Avenue in Newark and only tractor trailers were getting through, 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.

The Grand Central Parkway was also closed in both directions, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

Wind gusts of up to 40-50 mph in some areas with locally higher gusts downed trees and caused other damage.

A tree fell on a house in Mount Vernon, trapping a 13-year-old boy on the third floor.

Everyone in the home is OK, Stern reported.
