NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A group plans to rally at Penn Station Friday to push for federal funding of the Gateway Project, which would include a number of essential infrastructure projects in the New York City area, including a new Hudson River tunnel.

The multi-billion dollar project would help replace tunnels greatly damaged by Superstorm Sandy and would double rail capacity between New York and New Jersey.

According to the coalition of civic, labor and business groups, the Fedearl Railroad Administration missed its deadline by 18 months to approve the environmental impact statement for the new tunnel.

New York and New Jersey passed legislation to split the non-federal portion of the costs for the project earlier in the year.
