NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Beloved for its black and white cookies Glaser's Bake Shop -- a remnant from the Upper East Side's Germantown -- has closed after 116 years.

"It's a beautiful piece of history in this neighborhood, and that's quickly changing," one woman said.

Owner Herb Glaser said the time had come to close up shop.

"We just realized it's time to call it quits, it's just too much, too hard to keep it going," he said.

He said they would have been out of business years ago if they didn't own the building.

Glaser is the generation to run the bakery, which was opened in 1902 by German immigrants.

He once remarked that he almost went to dental school, but chose to go into the family business so he was the one causing the cavities.
