April 25, 2018 - 3:10 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Pixar's "Incredibles 2" is on its way to theaters in June, but before the film, audiences will be treated to one of the sweetest films currently making waves at the Tribeca Film Festival.

"Bao", the newest short from Disney and Pixar, follows an aging Chinese mom suffering from empty nest syndrome, but when when one of her dumplings suddenly springs to life, she gets another chance at motherhood. But Dumpling starts growing up fast, and Mom must come to the bittersweet revelation that nothing stays the same forever.

Director Domee Shi tells our Sharon Barnes-Waters on CityViews the inspiration for the film hits close to home.

"It's from my own life growing up as a lonely child to my two Chinese parents where I was treated like a precious little dumpling."

Shi is also making history as the first-ever woman to direct a Pixar short film.

"It's amazing. I couldn't have imagined when I came up with the idea over four years that the short would premiere during this time in Hollywood, in our country, in this world. It's really great timing."

Shi was joined by producer Becky Neiman-Cobb, who says while the story and look of the film is very specific, the themes are very universal.

"The themes of love and family and food... It's hard not to relate to that."
