Get ready for gridlock: 495 lane closures have begun

August 11, 2018 - 4:33 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Get ready for gridlock.

We've been hearing about this for some time, but those dreaded lane closures on Route 495 in New Jersey have finally begun. And what's already often a pretty unpleasant commute has now become unbearable.

The work started Friday night with the closure of the 31st Street ramp from Kennedy Boulevard to Route 495 westbound, with traffic detoured onto Patterson Plank Road.

Electronic signs had previously been lined up along Route 3 warning drivers to "expect delays," but they don't tell drivers to expect three years of delays, 1010 WINS' John Montone reported from Weehawken.

The lane closures are part of the rehabilitation of the Route 495 Bridge over Route 1&9 and Paterson Plank Road in North Bergen, according to the DOT.

Al from Nutley said he is planning an alternate route to the GWB but told Montone he also has secret routes he is keeping all to himself. "The way I travel, I got ways of getting in that makes up the time."

Since Al isn't sharing his secrets, keep it locked to 1010 WINS for the latest traffic updates to help you navigate the 495 mess.
