Garbage truck driver faces DUI charges after death of cyclist
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A cyclist struck by a garbage truck Friday afternoon on the Upper West Side has died, the NYPD said.
The victim was identified as Madison Jane Lyden, 23, of Australia.
Police said the collision happened around 4:45 p.m. in front of 70 Central Park West, near 66th Street.
Lyden was taken to Roosevelt Hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
An investigation revealed that Lyden was riding a bicycle north bound on Central Park West, in the bicycle lane, when a black Toyota livery vehicle pulled out into the bike lane from a stopped position. She swerved and was struck by a garbage truck, which was also travelling north bound on Central Park West. The operator of both vehicles remained on scene.
The driver of the truck, 44-year-old Felipe Chairez, was later arrested on charges including driving while intoxicated.
The advocacy group Transportation Alternatives says Lyden's death underscores the need for protected bike lanes.
