WESTBURY, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A funeral was held Sunday for a Binghamton University student from Long Island who was killed recently.

Nursing student Haley Anderson was only 22 years old when she was found dead a week ago Friday afternoon.

John Durand said last weekend that he was shocked when he heard about the news of about Anderson being killed.

“She was a great girl. She was an intern at a hospital this past year; this past summer, and she told me all about the operations she witnessed,” he said. “She had a great future ahead of her. It’s just tragic. It really is.”

Anderson’s ex-boyfriend, Orlando Tercero, is charged with her murder. Police said she was strangled.

Tercero allegedly fled before Anderson’s body was found, but he was arrested in Nicaragua this past week.

A GoFundMe page had been set up to help with Anderson's family's funeral costs.
