FREEHOLD, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Jerry Wolkowitz was standing outside his apartment in Freehold on Thursday, when a man came up and attacked him -- dragging him into a parking lot, stealing his car, and driving over him.

Wolkowitz, 55, is a member of the Freehold First Aid Squad. He was left in a coma and in critical condition.

"An all around great guy, always was willing to help anybody that needed it," squad member Sean Preston told CBS2.

Jamil Hubbard, 25, of Sayerville has been charged with attempted murder and bias intimidation. Police say Hubbard did not know Wolkowitz, but that he targeted him because he is white and Hubbard is black.
