The 8-year-old girl was playing by a shed in a wooded area behind her house on Deal Lane around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when the fox attacked her, biting her shins and feet, according to police.

A neighbor, Matthew Nictor, told WCBS-TV he heard the girl’s screams and rushed over to help.

“I had a ball in my hand, so I kind of approached the fox, I threw the ball at it and I kind of made myself as big as possible,” Nictor told the station. “Basically, I made sure the girl was alright and carried her up to the front of the house and just kind of calmed her down a little bit, talked her through the situation.”

The girl had as many as 19 small puncture wounds. She was treated at St. Barnabas Medical Center and released.

Livingston Animal Control was still searching for the fox on Thursday.
