Mechanical issue prompts Ft. Lauderdale-bound United flight to return to Newark: airline

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Fort Lauderdale-bound United Airlines aircraft returned to Newark Liberty International Airport Friday afternoon following a mechanical issue, a spokesman for the airline told 1010 WINS.

"United flight 458 from Newark to Fort Lauderdale returned to Newark following a mechanical issue," said the spokesman. "The aircraft landed safely and customers deplaned normally at the gate, where our team provided assistance."

The aircraft, a Boeing 737, initially departed around 1:40 p.m. and was over Virginia when it turned back. 

After returning to Newark, the flight departed again to Fort Lauderdale around 4:40 p.m. and is scheduled to arrive around 7:30 p.m.
