NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The first New York City Gridlock Alert Day begins Friday.

The city designates select days in November and December as Gridlock Alert Days, in anticipation of the high traffic volumes from holiday shopping and travel, as well as special event street closures.

Drivers can expect that travel through Midtown will take twice as long as a typical day of week.

There is major traffic expected to begin at approximately 3 p.m. on Friday, on the Van Wyck, LIE, Grand Central, along with the Lincoln, Holland, and Battery tunnels.

Bumper-to-bumper traffic is expected by 5 p.m.

Airports are bracing themselves for big crowds in the next 10 days as well as all roads that lead to airports, with Friday and Sunday being big departure days.
