NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police say a 20-year-old female bicyclist was struck by a white tractor trailer at approximately 9:25 a.m. on Monday.

The victim was heading northbound on Sixth Avenue between W 23rd and W 24th streets, when police say she appeared from between two cars, when a truck heading in the same direction hit her.

The bicyclist was not in a bike lane at the time of the collision and suffered severe head trauma.

She was taken to Bellevue Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The victim worked as a bike messenger, but was also a competitive cyclist- her friends arrived at the scene, and described biking as both her profession and her passion.

The driver left the scene but returned once he was informed that he hit someone and investigators say it is no longer considered a hit-and-run.
