Facebook security breach affects nearly 50 million accounts

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP) — Facebook says it recently discovered a security breach affecting nearly 50 million user accounts.

"Since we’ve only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed. We also don’t know who’s behind these attacks or where they’re based," Facebook vice president of product management Guy Rosen said.

The company says hackers exploited the "View As" feature on the service. The View As feature allows users to see what their profile looks like to other users on the platform. Hackers also managed to get ahold of access tokens which let people stay logged into the service without re-entering a password.

There were 50 million accounts affected, and as a precaution Facebook reset an additional 40 million accounts.

Facebook says it has taken steps to fix the security problem and alerted law enforcement.
