NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Ellen DeGeneres made a hair-raising reveal on her show's season 17 premiere Tuesday: She revealed her natural hair color -- for the first time in public.

While DeGeneres, 61, is known for her short blonde cropped mane, her natural hair color is actually light brown with specks of silver.

She revealed her natural hair color in a video shot over the summer. She was forced to shave her hair and let it grow naturally after her hair stylist told her to do so, in order to correct the damage done to a previous dye job.

On Tuesday's episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," she explained, "Long story short: My hair was long and then it was short and then it fell out."

"My hairdresser said I needed to shave it really short so that the color was completely out of it and I would grow new virgin hair," DeGeneres explained. "And since I wasn't working over the summer, that's what I did."

Her reaction? "I'd never seen my natural color," she said. "I'd been coloring my hair for so long!"

But it didn't last for long: She colored her hair back to blonde.

"I don't know how (it was) five hours to color this," she said pointing to her inch-long locks. "Some punk-ass kid can tag an entire overpass in six minutes and I'm five hours to do this."
