Off-duty NYPD officer killed in Long Island car crash

LYNBROOK, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – A two-car crashed on Long Island Wednesday morning killed an off-duty NYPD officer, police said.

The officer’s vehicle hit a tree after colliding with a minivan near the intersection of Peninsula Boulevard and Hempstead Avenue shortly before 7 a.m., according to Lynbrook police.

The cop was traveling westbound and the Toyota Sienna minivan was traveling eastbound at the time of the crash, police said.

Images from the scene show the officer's mangled vehicle crashed up against a residential building and several trees.

The officer, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

The driver of the minivan stayed at the scene of the crash and was treated for minor injuries.

Police haven’t said what may have caused the crash.
