May 02, 2018 - 7:31 am

NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- An off-duty police officer who went to a New Jersey barber shop to get a cut wound up having to stop an armed robber.

Just after 8:30, Tuesday night, the Newark barber shop -- which was set to close at 9 -- had one last customer, an off duty cop. When a man armed with a gun came in, he sprang into action.

The brother of the barber described what happened next.

"My brother says can I help you? What do you want? The guy pulls out a gun, tries to shoot him, the gun jams. My brother goes and tackles him to the floor, starts swinging at him, trying to hold the gun down. He goes to the cop, shoot him, shoot him, shoot him. So the cop  shoots him two times. The guy tries to shoot again, he goes outside, and the cop starts following him," he said.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was grazed in the face by a bullet and eventually tracked down on McCarter Highway.
