Driver fatally rear-ended off Southern State Parkway

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A 69-year-old man was killed after another driver rear-ended his vehicle and forced it off the roadway early Friday morning, police said.

The fatal crash occured just after midnight near exit 30 on the Southern State Parkway.

Officials say said a Honda, driven by Christopher Gomez-Almendarez, 23, rear-ended the GMC driven by Chacko Mammen, 69.

This impact caused Mammen's 2019 GMC to exit the roadway onto the right shoulder and crash into the trees.

The victim was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was pronnounced dead.

Gomez-Almendarez was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter,  third-degree assault and driving while ability impaired by drugs, police say.
