SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (1010 WINS/AP) -- The Dominican Republic's lead prosecutor says the shooting involving former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz  in a nightclub on June 9 was a result of mistaken identity.

Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez says Ortiz was not the target, that it was another man, dressed similarly to Ortiz, who was seated with the ex-baseball star on the night of the shooting in Santo Domingo.

Rodriguez said the shooting was orchestrated by a member of Mexico's Gulf Cartel, who remains on the run and did not immediately describe a motive.

Ortiz remains hospitalized from the gunshot wound to his back.
