Democrats Divided: Murphy, Sweeney At Odds Over Millionaires Tax

April 14, 2018 - 4:36 pm

TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Senate President Steve Sweeney are both Democrats, but they aren't seeing eye-to-eye on some things, and that could hold up this year's $37 billion budget.

Murphy and Sweeney said they agree on a lot, but they also publicly disagree over the governor's call to raise taxes on millionaires, and how to dole out education aid.

Their disagreement spilled into the open this week when Sweeney announced that he was holding up the nominations of Murphy's picks for education commissioner and higher education secretary.

Gov. Murphy said his staff will meet with Sweeney's next week and try to move on.
