NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio has renewed his push to ban plastic bags in the city.

Hizzoner says the bags are bad for the environment, bad for the economy, and bad for New York. The mayor said New York is behind the curve on the issue and it's time to put the planet first.

The city council previously passed, and the mayor signed into law a 5-cent fee on plastic and paper disposable bags, but it was blocked by Governor Cuomo and the state legislature.

De Blasio is supporting legislation introduced by two state lawmakers from Manhattan, that would ban plastic bags statewide.

The bill is co-sponsored by Liz Kreuger and Brad Holyman. It would also add bag fees between 10 and 25 cents on paper bags.
