NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The mayor is stepping up security measures in New York City schools.

"We are doing safety drills regularly now, and they will be happening this month or next month in schools all over the city. Every school will go through those shelter in place drills," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

The decision comes in response to a deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The attack claimed the lives of 17 students, teachers, and coaches.

Hizzoner also plans to bring more scanners into schools. They'll be there unannounced on a rolling basis to guard against weapons.

The mayor denounced the NRA and President Donald Trump's suggestion to arm teachers, saying he probably doesn't know anything about public schools.
