De Blasio-Backed Bill Could Accelerate Badly Needed NYCHA Repairs

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Public housing residents in the city could be getting a hand from Albany.

A bill introduced by Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) would help expedite repairs to NYCHA's heating system.

"This much needed legislation will allow NYCHA to speed up the procurement process, and in turn, make repairs more efficiently to ensure that the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers that reside in NYCHA apartments are living in safe and healthy homes," he said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has been pushing for this legislation which could pass the Assembly within the week. The Republican-held Senate has been critical of NYCHA and the mayor's handling of the housing authority.

During an interview on Friday, the mayor said such legislation could shave at least a year off of improvement and repair efforts in NYCHA buildings.

In a statement to 1010 WINS, NYCHA officials said they were eager to see the bill pass.

"We thank Speaker Heastie and the Assembly for introducing this critical bill that accelerate vital repairs and upgrade our residents need. The City has cut red tape and shaved up to 20 months off the time it takes to make major heating upgrades The Speaker's design-build reform would save an additional year. We also welcome the additional transparency measures included in the bill in an effort to increase accountability" the statement said.
