Avella pushes back on de Blasio’s plans for elite high school admissions

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio says he's committed to changing the admission policy to the city's elite high schools despite opposition from State Senator Tony Avella of Queens.

The mayor has called the test an unfair barrier to black and Latino students.

Avella has proposed a bill that would require each of the city's 32 school districts to offer a middle school gifted program which would make the students more competitive when it's time to apply to the elite schools.

Avella's district is heavily Asian and the elite schools have a large proportion of Asian students.
