1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reports, it stems from the barbell beating death of a woman who was close to the female suspect -- her mother.

Ralph Keppler, 28, and Francesca Kiel, 21, face second degree murder and other charges in the death of Kiel's mother Theresa.

"This former corrections officer and his girlfriend are charged with a brutal, premeditated attack that left Theresa Kiel in a vegetative state for nearly two years with catastrophic injuries that ultimately took her life," said Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas. "Violence will never be tolerated in Nassau County, and our prosecutors are committed to holding these defendants accountable for the horrific murder alleged in this indictment."

Singas said Kiel helped Keppler ambush her mother inside of her Long Beach apartment. Kiel allegedly put a GPS device on her mother's car that would notify her when she was getting close to home. It's also alleged that she called Keppler a taxi following the murder.

Keppler had initially been charged with attempted murder, that charge was later upgraded. Kiel was charged in November after authorities discovered her alleged involvment.

Kiel was being held on $1.5 million bond or $750,000 cash bail, Keppler was awaiting a bail hearing on Monday.
