Cyclist struck by private trash truck day after NYPD launches blitz

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Twenty-five tons of steel on wheels sent a cyclist flying at Fifth Avenue and 47th Street late Monday night – he landed in the hospital in critical condition.

The cyclist was hit by a private garbage truck less than a day after the NYPD said it was cracking down on such trucks.

Private carting companies have killed 20 people in the last two years, according to the NYPD.

One private hauler named Joe told 1010 WINS’ John Montone that it’s other companies, not his, that are the problem.

“They should focus on the trucks that really cause the problem,” he said.

On Monday, the NYPD said it was cracking down on garbage trucks following a slew of sometimes deadly crashes.

The city’s Business Integrity Commission is investigating corruption in the carting industry.
