Cuomo Furious Over Pizza Delivery Man’s Immigration Arrest

June 07, 2018 - 4:31 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The detention of an illegal immigrant from Ecuador by the military police as he delivered pizza to soldiers at Fort Hamilton got under the skin of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

He issued a statement on Thursday saying, "detaining a hardworking man, separating a father from his children, and tearing apart communities doesn't make America safe."

"A wrong-minded immigration policy grounded in bias and cruelty doesn't make America great," he added.

Cuomo said he spoke to Villavicencio's wife Sandra who said she is worried for her husband and children. "As a father of three, I can't imagine the fear she and Pablo are feeling now," Cuomo said.

The governor said the state will provide Pablo Villavicencio and his family with free legal representation through the Liberty Defense Fund project.

Villavicencio is now in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Cuomo's gubernatorial challenger, Cynthia Nixon, also tweeted her support for Villavicencio.

Nixon also said via Twitter that Cuomo must pass an executive order granting driver’s licenses to all now. "He must stop dragging his feet or there will be more stories like Pablo's."
