NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Gov. Andrew Cuomo took time out of his coronavirus briefing on Friday to commend a Kansas farmer who sent a single N95 mask to New York to be given to a medical worker.

Cuomo brought out the letter and the mask that a farmer sent him as he was talking about how the virus brings out “the best and the worst of humanity.”

“Everything just gets elevated,” Cuomo said. “The strength in people and the weakness in people. The beauty in people and the ugliness in people.”

“For me the beauty you see and the strength that you see compensates and balances for the weakness,” the governor said. “And I get inspired by the strength, so I can tolerate the heartbreak and the weakness.”

“Here’s a letter that I received that sums it up,” Cuomo said as he held up a piece of paper.

Cuomo said he received the letter from a farmer named Dennis along with an N95 mask, which have been used by medical workers on the frontline to protect them from catching the virus.

The farmer wrote that he lived with his ill wife in Kansas and that both of them were in their 70s. He said he had several masks left over from his farming days and he wanted to send one to the city to help out.

Read the letter from the farmer:

    Dear Mr. Cuomo,

I seriously doubt that you will ever read this letter as I know you are busy beyond belief with the disaster that has befallen our country. We currently are a nation in crisis. Of that there is no doubt. Your approach has been spot on correct. I commend you for that and especially for telling the truth, something that has been sorely lacking as of late.

I am a retired farmer hunkered down in N.E. Kansas with my wife who has but one lung and occasional problems with her remaining lung. She also has diabetes. We are in our 70s now and frankly I am afraid for her.

Enclosed you will find a solitary N-95 mask left over from my farming days. It has never been used. If you could, would you please give this mask to a nurse or doctor in your city? I have kept four masks for my immediate family. Please keep on doing what you do so well, which is to lead.
