Cuomo, Clinton push to decriminalize abortion in New York State

January 07, 2019 - 12:11 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Hillary Clinton is joining Gov. Andrew Cuomo at Barnard College on Monday in a push to pass legislation decriminalizing abortion in New York State.

The Reproductive Health Act, which was sponsored by State Sen. Liz Krueger, would repeal a state law that was written three years before the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade.

Under the law, abortions after 24 weeks are illegal unless necessary to save a woman’s life.

Roe v. Wade takes precedence over state laws but progressive politicians fear a reversal in the Trump era.

Republicans in the state Senate blocked attempts to protect abortion rights at the state level for years, but Democrats now control the Senate, Assembly and governor’s office.

Cuomo took to Twitter Monday morning, writing: “Today we are sending a strong message that we stand united in the fight to protect women’s rights. We must codify Roe v. Wade into state law and we must do it now.”
