NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- It's a good news - bad news situation regarding crime in the city.

First the good news from Chief of Department Terence Monahan.

"Overall crime for the first six months of the year is down 1.8 percent, 853 crimes compared to the first six months of 2017," he said.

That's with 17,000 fewer arrests, but there's still trouble in the Bronx.

"The Bronx is driving the murder year to date with 51 homicides, an increase of 21 murders from 2017," he said.

Monahan said about 30 percent of the homicides are gang related.
