Coyote Shot After Attacking Cop In Westchester

YONKERS, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Two coyotes were on the loose and on the attack in Westchester, prompting Yonkers police to put out a warning to secure small children and animals.

A dog was killed, a police officer and postal worker were bitten, and a cyclist was attacked.

A coyote has been captured and killed at the Dunwoodie Golf Course in Yonkers. Cops don't know if it's the one they were searching for. The other one is still on the loose.

"The coyote did become aggressive with the police officer, it came out of the brush, and bit that officer and then was shot at that time," Westchester Police Department Spokesman Kieran O'Leary said.

Patricia Dundas saw the coyote attack the postal worker.

"She's yelling 'he bit me, he bit me,' and he got the animal off of her by screaming at it," she said.

A coyote also lunged at a woman riding her bike on a trail just north of Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers. Residents are worried about the animals being rabid.

"It's the daytime, unusual for coyotes to be that aggressive with people unless the animal is rabid," O'Leary said.

Police in Hastings-On-Hudson were tracking a coyote suspected of being rabid. Signs were posted on the popular acqueduct trail and Dobbs Ferry kept grade school kids inside for recess.
