Council Asks DOT To Bring Permit Parking To Upper Manhattan

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- In a lot of big cities you need a permit to park on a residential street for any length of time. New York does not have this system, but it could if some members of the city council get their way.

The council's proposal would have the DOT plan residential permit parking zones in various areas north of 60th Street where commuters from New Jersey and Westchester leave their cars and then take the subway downtown to avoid garage fees.

One longtime resident said it's long overdue.

"You know what it's not fair to the guy who lives on the block to spend an hour, hour-and-a-half looking for a parking spot," he said.

How much a permit would cost is still to be determined. Commercial and metered parking areas would be exempt.
