FREEPORT, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Cops responding to a complaint were met with gunfire on Sunday night.

The shots broke out around midnight on the streets of the Village of Freeport.

Mayor Robert Kennedy said two offiers approached a group hanging out in a parking lot. Suddenly one person took off. The cops gave chase down an alley, and that's where Mayor Kennedy said the suspect turned and fired at close range.

Officers fired back.

Mayor Kennedy said it was a close call.

"Definitely, it was an attempted murder of police officers, all pretty young, hired within the last five years," he said.

No one was injured, and the suspect was arrested. He was found with a gun hiding under a bush.
