Cops probe smashing of synagogue window as possible hate crime

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police are looking for suspects in an act of vandalism at a Brooklyn synagogue that’s being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Rabbi Menachem Heller was having a Sabbath dinner with his family at the Chabad of Bushwick on Flushing Avenue late Friday night when they heard a loud noise.

“Sounded like a boom or explosion,” Heller said. “It was really loud. It shocked us.”

Police say two men had smashed the front window of the synagogue.

Since it was the Sabbath, Heller asked a passerby to phone 911.

Police are now investigating it as a bias incident, one that comes amid a rise in hate crimes across the city, with Jewish people the most commonly targeted group, according to the NYPD.

“It’s scary to know that something like this could happen here,” Heller said. “We’re here for a while already and nothing like this ever happened.”
