EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- If you picked up cash on Route 3 on Thursday, Brink's would like it back.

Cops say some $6,000 has already been returned after money went flying, and drivers jumped out of cars to scoop up bills.

East Rutherford Police say anyone who holds onto the money can be arrested.

"You can be arrested for this, but the issue and the hard part is identifying who the actors are. Who picked up the money and left?" Capt. Phillip Taormina said.

Charges would be determined by the amount of money picked up.

"It would be like theft of mislaid goods," Taormina said. "The truck was parked on the shoulder and two armed guards, Brink's employees, were trying to gather the money."

Police say that those who picked up money have no claim to it.

"They would have a duty to give the money over," Taormina said.

The incident also caused some accidents; one on Route 3 west when someone stopped to pick up bills, and another on Route 3 east as people jumped a divider to score some cash.

Cops are asking anyone with information or videos to call 201-438-1065.
