Controversy Swirls Around New NYC Schools Chancellor

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Some controversy has surfaced Thursday regarding the new NYC schools chancellor.

According to several reports, Richard Carranza allegedly worked to damage a subordinate's career in San Francisco after she admonished Carranza for flirting with a woman other than his wife.

This is according to court papers filed in 2015.

A city hall spokeswoman says the allegations were completely false and Carranza was never named in the lawsuit, nor was he involved in the settlement.

This teacher, Veronica Chavez, also accused Carranza of promoting men at the expense of women while he ran the San Francisco school system.

On Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio named Carranza schools chancellor to replace Carmen Fariña who is retiring at the end of the month.

He starts later this month at an annual salary of $345,000.

Carranza was the mayor's second choice after Miami Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho accepted the position, and then turned it down.

Carranza did not respond to requests for comment on the suit.
