NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- It's the end of an era.

Marie Gambardella, 88, was a pioneer in the NYPD and she got a very special walkout Wednesday from the 76th Precinct in Carroll Gardens.

in fact, she is the only servant to get a walkout.

Gambardella worked at this precinct for  47 years. She was among the first civilian receptionists hired by the NYPD in 1971.

Marie was one of 27 people hired during the department's early efforts at community policing to have precincts be less intimidating to those coming in or calling.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill  came to wish her the best as well as family, friends, neighbors and current and former members of the NYPD greeted Marie at a surprise party at the precinct. Many told our Juliet Papa she was their adopted mom: She cared about them and went to their family events.

And the caring was mutual.

"I can't believe it. I never wanted this... I don't like fanfare but I love all of these guys and these women," Marie said.

Marie said 47 years may seem like a long time but it really wasn't and says may come back to volunteer.

She lives only two blocks away so she just may!
