Comptroller Stringer: ‘We need to get ICE the hell out of this city’

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – City Comptroller Scott Stringer says enforcement by Immigration and Customs Enforcement is growing faster in New York City than in any other city in the nation – and he wants ICE to take a hike.

“We need to get ICE the hell out of this city and state courthouses once and for all,” he said at a press conference downtown Thursday morning.

Stringer says he has conducted an investigation and found what he described as a stark escalation in arrests and deportations by ICE.

“Our new analysis of ICE data reveals for the first time that New York City has seen a staggering increase in immigration enforcement compared to other U.S. cities,” he said.

Stringer says over 1,500 additional immigrants have been picked up off the streets and kicked out of the U.S. since 2017 compared to the three years prior to 2017.

He says that over 800 undocumented immigrants who were deported had no past criminal convictions and were “just picked off the streets in the dead of night at their homes.”

The comptroller is calling for greater support, protections and legal representation for immigrants in the city.
