Community group steps up to save Halloween Dog Parade

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Great news for dog lovers; the annual Halloween Dog Parade is back.

The event had been held in Tompkins Square Park, but had been cancelled due to insurance issues.

Now, it's on, but it's been moved to a new venue by the East River.

Melanie was thrilled.

"A lot of people come, a lot of people look forward to it, it's fun for the dogs," she said.

After last year's large turnout, the city wanted organizers to take out a $1 million insurance policy which they couldn't afford.

City Councilmember Carlina Rivera secured the funding from a local community group, thus eliminating the need for a corporate donor.

"We wanted to make sure that we didn't have a big sponsor coming in and essentially hijacking the parade, and making it so that it's not what we all come to expect every year," she said.

It will take place at the East River Band Shell on Sunday October 28, from noon to 3 p.m.
