Clerk Shot After Handing Armed Robber Cash In Bay Ridge Stick-Up

April 12, 2018 - 10:57 am

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A clerk at a smoke shop in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn is expected to survive after being shot in the chest during a robbery.

It's the only business on the block open 24 hours, and it happened in the middle of the night at the Mo Better Smoke Shop on Fifth Ave.

Owner Mohammed Sulemain said the robber's face was covered, and he didn't say much to the smoke shop employee who had only been working there for a couple of weeks.

"Give me the money, give me the money, when the employee handed him the money, he takes the money and then shot him," he said.

He said it was a small amount of money, and didn't understand why he shot the employee, since he complied.

Amanda Zantino heads the neighborhood's business district.

"You know if you really look at the statistics, Bay Ridge by and large, is a very safe neighborhood to be in, so something like this is always kind of shocking," she said.

The owner said the 38-year-old employee had surgery for a wound to his side and is expected to recover.

The suspect remains at large.
