City probes NJ trash hauler after deadly accident in Gowanus

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The city is investigating the New Jersey trash hauling company which owns the truck that lost a tire on the Gowanus earlier this month. The tire went flying through the windshield of an SUV and killed the driver.

The city acknowledges that Century Waste Services is the subject of an active investigation, but there were no other details available. Century has racked up 74 federal safety violations over the last couple of years. It's also under investigation by the Port Authority which wants to know how the company scored $2.7 million worth of contracts.

The father and uncle of Century owner Marc Savino were banned from the city trash hauling industry 20 years ago because they were employing a reputed associate of the Gambino family as their head of operations.

A spokesman for Century tells the New York Post they've hired outside experts to analyze each and every vehicle and advise as to any and all safety concerns.
