City cracks down on bike rentals making a mess in Midtown

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Bike sharing is great -- until you trip on one of the bikes while you're trying to walk on the sidewalk.

With that and other complaints in mind, a Manhattan city councilman is taking action.

Rental bikes by the dozen are illegally blocking streets and sidewalks. Pedestrians couldn't walk, and moms couldn't get through with strollers, so City Councilman Keith Powers got city agencies together to craft a solution.

"Immediately told the businesses they had to fix the issue and bring the bikes inside rather than taking up parking spots and street space for the bikes," he said.

They issued fines and sent letters of warning, and for the most part the bikes were moved inside, but at Central Park Sightseeing on West 56th Street the bikes are back.

Patrick couldn't park his truck until they moved.

"Because you're here, they're moving them, but I just found parking about 20 minutes ago. This was all full when I just drove by before," he said.
