NEW YORK (1010 WINS) The City Council is expected to hold a public hearing on a proposal to ban the sale of fur in New York City.

The hearing will take place at 1 p.m.

Furriers, workers in the industry, along with supporters of the ban are expected to descend onto city ahll to let their feelings be known.

The ban would not ban the manufacture of fur in the city.

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson is the primary sponsor of the bill.

He says killing animals for fur is “morally wrong.”

“This would be a huge impact on so many lives and people’s families,” said Maria Reich, one of the leaders of the rally in opposition to the bill, “We would lose maybe 500 plus jobs. These workers, this is what they know for 30, 40 years some people. They wouldn’t have the opportunity to get into a new field.
