NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Christmas tree critter is bugging Sen. Chuck Schumer this week.

Schumer says the spotted lanternfly is coming in on trees from out of state and can survive the trip to city markets in egg form.

“This little critter looks nice, but he’s no love bug,” Schumer said. “He really can destroy many kinds of trees.”

The senator said “trees in Central Park, on the streets of New York City and our beautiful, leafy suburbs could very well be at risk.”

The federal government gave Pennsylvania 17.5 million dollars to go after the fly and Schumer says “we may need help soon.”

He didn't say how much federal money he thinks New York would need to stop the pesky bug.
