'Chilling' anti-immigrant fliers found in Sunnyside

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Anti-immigrant fliers have reportedly been turning up in Queens.

City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer said he spotted them when he was out for a run in Sunnyside on Sunday. They were posted on electrical cabinets at Skillman and 35th. He told the Daily News he tore them down.

“It was meant to send a chilling message to all immigrants and to get people to turn on their neighbors,” he said. “It’s outrageous.”

The fliers have also turned up on college campuses around the country, and advise readers to report suspected illegal immigrants to ICE.

“A notice to all citizens of the United States of America: It is your civic duty to report any and all illegal aliens to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They have broken the law,” the fliers read.

Van Bramer said the fliers have no place in his community.

“I don’t want any people in my borough, particularly in this neighborhood, to be afraid because of their immigration status, no matter what it is. Everyone’s our neighbor here.” he said.

A leader from a group called Vanguard American -- which was involved in the deadly trouble in Charlottesville last year -- confirmed they were behind the fliers, but denied that the group posted them in Queens.
