NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- It's not a record to boast about.

The CDC reports preliminary data show rates of sexually transmitted diseases are soaring -- reaching almost 2.3 million cases in the U.S. last year.

That's the highest number of diagnosed cases ever of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia around the country.

Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of the CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, says the nation is sliding backward on the problem with systems that identify and ultimately prevent STDs strained near the breaking point.
