NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would like to remind you that it's a bad idea to reuse condoms.

"We say it because people do it: Don't wash or reuse condoms! Use a fresh one for each sex act," the CDC tweeted.

The tweet links to a page offering advice on the use of condoms and dental dams.

CDC statistician Casey Copen says condom use is a public health issue.

"STDs can lead to long-term consequences, such as infertility," she said. "Condoms, when used consistently and correctly, reduce the risk of HIV and STDs."

The CDC says there is an STI epidemic going on with more than 2 million cases of gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and syphilis reported in 2016.

A CDC report published in August 2017, found only a third of Americans use condoms.
